Controversy is possible with regard to excess deaths prior to 2022 — when the mild Omicron variant of COVID became predominant. But Omicron is safer than flu, so excess deaths after December 2021 are inexplicable. Controversy around those deaths — e.g., the suggestion that COVID was causing them — would be dishonest.
But look at the age 35-44 row of this Society of Actuaries report:
That’s from 116% to 128% excess quarterly death during 1.5 years of time when the circulating disease was less lethal than flu.
What (really) is going on here?
