A “Debbie Downer” is someone who always looks at the dark side of things, instead of looking at the bright side of things every once in a while. Recently, I shared a substack which uses empirical evidence to strongly suggest that a growing police state in the USA is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent Americans.
That’s depressing though.
In order to take your mind off of the negativity which goes with evidence-based logical reasoning which indicates that a government is very likely killing people, and even by the hundreds of thousands, this post will be diversionary and light-hearted instead.
Have you ever thought about the probability of sharing a birthday with someone at a cocktail party?
Probably not, as it is such an odd thought to begin with.
Even still, what do you think would be the probability of not having anyone share any birthdays with anyone else — when the cocktail party is attended by 100 people?
Well, look no further than this post for your answers, because I took the time (and it was lots of time!) to run 10 million computer simulations of “one-hundred-person-cocktail-parties.”
The kicker:
If you are at a party with 100 people in it, it is more likely that you’d be hit by lightning (1 chance in 1.2 million) during the next 12 months, than that no one there shares a birthday with anybody else.
