Germany was one of the hardest hit nations in the flu season of 2017/18, recording 1300 monthly deaths per million in March 2018. Peak death under COVID in Germany was the month of the vaccine rollout: December 2020.
The monthly death rate per million in December of 2020 hit 1311 monthly deaths per million, almost 1% higher than the peak monthly death in recent years with seasonal flu.
Evidence from Germany indicates that COVID wasn’t significantly worse than severe flu — even though it was, on average, worse — so that would mean that medical counter-measures taken should not have been expanded significantly beyond that seen with flu seasons.
COVID wasn’t much worse than severe flu in Germany, so official mitigation measures implemented should not have been much more stringent or more comprehensive than usual.
Counter-measures should be in proportion to the medical threat faced, and the medical threat from COVID in Germany wasn’t significantly higher than that seen with severe flu.
