In the 40th week of 2023, for those aged 15-44 in the Euro Area, the critical threshold for a “substantial increase” in weekly deaths was 1,668:
Weekly death counts as high or higher than that are deemed to be a “substantial increase” beyond expectations. But Week 40 deaths in those under age 45 were much higher than this upper threshold:
The 2,484 weekly deaths represent 149% of the upper critical threshold (a 49% excess beyond the threshold). Because the weekly death count is nothing like the 6-year record of weekly counts in the graph, and nothing like the year of COVID (2020), public health officials need to be held to account in explaining the excess.
