Deaths as a Ratio of Births in New Zealand

The “natural increase” in population in New Zealand (NZ) stalled out in 2022 but it wasn’t clear from data if it was because birth rates stalled out, or if it was because death rates jumped up.
However, data up to and including 2022 reveal that it was the death rate which jumped up in 2022:
The top line is births and they remained stable into 2022. But deaths rose, leading to a drop in the red line (the “natural increase” line). Because births are stable in New Zealand, you can plot the deaths as a share of births, looking for any years which are out of place:
After 2010, NZ deaths started to rise, but in 2022, they rose by so much that they broke trend — indicating that something was killing off New Zealanders in 2022.
